Project Summary

The third-place student team developed a high-performance envelope using a Larsen Truss wall system, applying perfect-wall principles to minimize thermal bridging and maximize insulation which is well suited to Winnipeg’s climate.

Their submission demonstrated strong technical analysis, with clear construction detailing, while also balancing performance with practicality and thoughtful design choices. Overall, this is a strong, well-developed design.

The Team

Carl Natiuk is graduating from the Architectural/Engineering Program at RRC Polytech. He is interested in alternative construction and green building technologies, as well as building science and HVAC systems. He sees the Larsen Stud system as a simple way to increase the insulative value of walls while mitigating thermal bridging, and is thankful for the opportunity to investigate Larsen Studs further through the BEDC 2026.

Kepler Blumrich is a graduating student from the Architectural Engineering Technology program at Red River College Polytechnic. He enjoys drafting building assemblies and working in group settings. He finds deep satisfaction in a thought-through-plan becoming reality. He highly recommends any students, if given the opportunity, to partake in the Building Envelope Design Competition in the future.
